Should we conclude that authority is essential in government and should it be strengthened?

Since 2008 authoritarian China has doubled income while the liberal West has seen little or no growth. Already the largest economy in the world, at this rate China will overtake even our income per head in just twenty years. Should we conclude that authority is essential in government and should it be strengthened? Or is greater democracy still the cure rather than the disease?

Yu Jie (Cherry) : Yu Jie, Head of China Foresight at LSE IDEAS and teaches at LSE. Her research focuses on the decision-making process of Chinese foreign policy as well as China’s economic diplomacy.

Jeremy Waldron: Professor of Legal and Political philosophy at NYU, Waldron is a prolific scholar on rights, political institutions, legitimate authority and democracy.

Deirdre McCloskey: Distinguished Professor of Economics, History and English at the University of Chicago, McCloskey is also the author of 17 books.
