Future Mario & Donkey Kong References In Konga (1961)? Michael Gough, Batman & Spider-Man
Part 4
Nintendo's platform-scroller video game series Super Mario Bros. (1985-) may show some future clues (circa 2024) to the Ghostbusters sci-fi / comedy franchise as well as films based on the comic book series of Marvel and DC. The original 1984 film was the basis for a computer game eventually ported to the NES home console in 1988.
In this video I show a possible future Nintendo reference to characters Donkey Kong & Mario in the 1961 monster film, Konga. In this, a scientist (Michael Gough) experiments on plants & animals, increasing their size and ferocity towards humans. The title character, a Chimpanzee undergoes a transformation into a giant ape on the scale of King Kong and terrorizes London.
Donkey Kong (also an ape) was the opponent of the 1981 Nintendo arcade game. This was the first appearance of the Mario character which would later become the main mascot of the company.
Several monsterous plants are also shown in Konga, including a Venus Fly Trap. I thought these similar to the Piranha plant seen in the Super Mario Bros. games.
Gough was later butler Alfred of Bruce Wayne / Batman in Tim Burton's 1989 movie. Michael Keaton played Batman in this and later crossed over to play the Spider-Man villain The Vulture in 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Super Mario Bros. 3 was featured in the final tournament of the 1990 videogame / road trip film, The Wizard. This was noteably the film debut of actor Tobey Maguire, who played Peter Parker / Spider-Man 3 Sam Raimi directed movies released between 2002-2007. More recently, he reprised his role in the MCU with 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The Desert Land level of Super Mario Bros. 3 (Level 2) Boss is a turtle named Morton Koopa Jr. The common thinking in the 1990's may have been that this character was named for "real-world" talk show host & actor Morton Downey Jr. But interestingly, Robert Downey Jr. (no relation) played Tony Stark / Iron Man in the MCU films and in the summer of 2024, was announced to be switching characters and will now play comic villain Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, due out in summer 2025.
Ghosts enemies are introduced from Super Mario Brothers 3 (1988). Called Boo, they appear in world 2 (Desert Land) in the fortress.
In the same scene as the Boo, close-by are the Thwomp enemies which are rock-like with encrusted spikes. I thought the Thwomp similar in appearance to the Superman villain character Doomsday.
If accurate, this specific point in Super Mario 3 may show a time period near to the present (November, 2024).
Why I believe this is:
The 5th Ghostbusters film Frozen Empire was released in March.
The Bobby Brown music video for Ghostbusters 2 in 1989 "On Our Own" featured cameos by Donald Trump (just re-elected as President of The USA in November) & a major link to Superman: actor Christopher Reeve.
A major visual anchor or reference point may be the Piranha Plant (plant with mouth & teeth that pops up out of the pipes / similar to the "real world" Venus Fly Trap), encountered early in the gameplay of Super Mario Bros. released in 1985.
Actor Rick Moranis (Louis in Ghostbusters) was later in the 1986 adaptation of the stage theatrical musical Little Shop Of Horrors. Audrey II in this story is similar looking carnivorous plant.
Moranis was in the 1989 comedy Honey I shrunk The Kids, where he played a tinkering inventor who reduces the size of his kids by accident. A giant ant is prominently featured in this. This film may be predictive to actor Paul Rudd's future role as Marvel Comics superhero Ant-Man who also has the power to reduce his size to a smaller scale.
Rudd joined the Ghostbusters movie cast in 2012's Afterlife film and subsequently appeared in Frozen Empire in 2024.
