In the first chapter of Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within, we find Gabriel Knight, the new Schattenjäger, having just relocated to his family home, Schloss Ritter, from New Orleans. There, he is approached one night by a group of local farmers who ask him to investigate the recent killing of a young girl by a strange murderous wolf - allegedly escaped from a zoo. As Gabriel embarks on the investigation and dutifully checks out the local zoo, he begins to suspect that there might be something much more serious than just a couple of escaped wolves at stake, and that the zoo's oddly opinionated administrator might somehow be involved - but in what way, it remains absolutely unclear.
