In this chapter, we follow Zoë as she makes her way into Abnaxus' Abode (past the goons of Onor Hileriss who want to cut down the magic tree for political points). There, she encounters our old friend Brian Westhouse, and together they sort out the information providing clues as to how to get to the Oular. Some of the clues about a "soul-stone" then lead Zoë to yet another old friend, Roper Klacks, but, unfortunately, he doesn't get to share a lot of knowledge with her before he is taken away by the Azadi for propagating magic with his puppet show. As Zoë and Crow set out on their journey to find the Oular, we briefly return to Kian and Letho, on board the Azadi cloudship en route to Ge'en - and see them sharing an "intimate moment".
