Gaining and Applying Knowledge - Truth, Probability, and Wisdom
Are appeals to authority always fallacies? This is the diving board for a much bigger and more important topic - how do we gain and apply knowledge? I go over the three types of knowledge: Truth (arrived at through deduction), probability (arrived at through inductive reasoning), and wisdom/experience (gained socially). For most of these types of knowledge, we rely on experts and other authorities to provide the key knowledge necessary to make decisions, while we provide our own expertise to others.
