Galactic Attack (Layer Section / Gunlock / RayForce) Playthrough with Commentary
24Shoot 'Em All continues with one of Taito's classic game from the Ray series: Galactic Attack! This game has many different names because of licensing issues, but one thing's for sure, it's one heck of a game no matter which one you use! Tune in at 8 PM EST to catch the action!
The core mechanic of this game is that you have missiles that can lock on enemies in the background. The "layer section" really means that you have to take care of both enemies in the background layer and the foreground layer. Pretty revolutionary for its time! They did not however invent the idea (Xevious came first), but what really sets this one apart is the brutality of the levels and bosses. The action in this one is a lot more intense! The story is also surprisingly deep and I did not expect the ending at all. Instead of starting from Earth and going into space, you start in space and have to go to the center of the Earth to take down a planet-controlling AI that went rogue and destroyed almost all of humanity! You are tasked to destroy the core of the planet, it is pretty much a suicide mission!
Another cool thing about this game is that there aren't any loadings between levels and the music blends in very well with what is going on in the levels. Made by Taito's in-house band Zuntata, it's one of their best works that's for sure!
In this playthrough, I complete the game 3 times on Normal difficulty on the Sega Saturn version. The first playthrough is on the Saturn mode, which has a a new update soundtrack and a wider screen ratio. The second one is on the Arcade mode, which is almost a perfect port of the arcade original (only a few effects missing, but nothing that raises a red flag). The last playthrough is again on the Saturn mode, but this time with the HUD turned off, giving it a more cinematic-feel! The more I've played, the better I got! 1CC is next!
