Game of Thrones | When Illusion of Choice Works | Why Telltale and A Song of Ice and Fire Jibed
Across the many IPs with which Telltale Games worked, critics have always been quick to point out that many of the decisions set before the player only really presented the illusion of choice. In other words, at a surface glance, the player's actions may have seemed to alter the course of the story, but upon deeper inspection, one would discover that the player influence was only ever short-lived, and that ultimately, the destination would always be the same.
Without defending that, I make the point in this video that that formula actually works very well in the context of the Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire), since it isn't so much Telltale conspiring to take away the player's agency in the story as much as it is the characters of the world, themselves.
