Game Playthrough #6: Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song Remastered (PC)
This is my playthrough for Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song Remastered on the PC, and it's arguably my worst one yet. But first, let's actually talk about the game first.
In Japan, after the success of the first three SaGa games which we non-Japanese got as Final Fantasy Legend, Nintendo contacted Squaresoft to create a SaGa game for their then-upcoming new console, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, or SNES, and they got Romancing SaGa. This game is, needless to say, a remake of that game, taking all the best parts (and some of the worst parts) of both earlier and later entries into Square's SaGa franchise. For example, the Glimmer/Spark system, where your characters will every now and then learn a technique involving that weapon during battle comes from Romancing SaGa 2, and it's a system that has been used in every SaGa game since. The New Game+ feature comes from SaGa Frontier, and funnily enough, the way Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song Remastered's version of New Game+ works comes directly from SaGa Frontier Remastered's version of New Game+, where the player gets to decide what carries over from their previous playthrough, so long as they've beaten the game at least once.
Graphics-wise, the game retains the PS2 bloom and whatnot from the original version, but it does look just a little better. The characters appear sharper and cleaner, as do the backgrounds, but I saw on Steam someone using some form of mod that makes the game look even better.
Music-wise, the game retains the soundtrack from the PS2 version, as well, but unfortunately for me, at least, no option to swap back to the original Super FamiCom version of the OST. Not saying that the new tracks are bad, but I just prefer the original version of them to the newer ones, namely Albert's theme and Hawke's theme being the two stand out ones. I do prefer the Remake's versions of Jamil's, Gray's, and Barbara's themes, however.
I think it's important to tell you that the SaGa series has always had an emphasis on replay value, and starting from Romancing SaGa 1 is where I feel that it's the most evident. Eight different main characters to choose from, several different quests you can embark upon, the way the characters fight in battle being completely up to the player even though some characters do better in certain roles than others, the sky really is the limit here.
Unfortunately for me, this is the part where I have to fess up and admit to cheating. See, while I was originally only using Cheat Engine and Murgee Auto-Clicker to grind out jewels for me while I did other things, eventually I got so burned out on the grinding that I started doing it for weapon techniques and money, too. It's not that I didn't want to cheat, but rather because I was just so darned burned out on the grinding. I'm not proud of it at all, pretty ashamed of it, and while I do ask and even beg for your understanding and forgiveness, I understand how frustrating and heartbreaking this is for all of you. However, everything that I did cheat for is things that aren't that hard to get to, just time consuming, and I don't want my good laptop crapping out on me.
One more thing that makes this my worst playthrough ever. Early on in the video, you'll see that the video and the audio desynced. Everything appeared to be going fine with Streamlabs OBS, but I was hoping that by rendering the video out, it would fix itself, but unfortunately, it did not. If anyone out there knows how I can fix this so that it doesn't happen again, I would be eternally grateful. Again, I offer my sincerest apologies and I ask for your forgiveness and understanding.
