[Gamemaker Studio 2] Testing a 2D sprite shooter engine

I'm trying to make a mouse-and-keyboard shooter with mecha and other futuristic subject matter, procedurally-generated maps and random loot like you'd see in Diablo or Path of Exile, and the ability to customize your mech and weapons like in Armored Core or something similar.
So far, I've created 8-directional movement, aiming and firing weapons with the mouse, and a total of three weapons- a machine gun (with slight randomized spread due to recoil), a rocket launcher (with a simple form of splash damage), and a beam saber (with a hitbox that follows the player's position, shown by the red shape).
The sprite assets are original. The other assets...not so much.
