#5 - Hit Stick (Madden 08) - Was a simple but effective way to give players more control on defense and created more engagement due to the idea that people love big hits. EA Sports revolutionized the Sports Video Game industry by utilizing the left thumb stick to perform moves. Shorty after 2008 many other sports games were incorporating similar gameplay features.
#4 - Matchmaking (Halo 2) - Revolutionized Online Multiplayer by making it easy for players to join matches and communicate back and forth between each other. They incorporated an in-game friends list for easy social elements and a clan system like never before seen. This ultimately changed the way developers created matchmaking.
#3 - Loadout System (COD4: Modern Warfare) - The traditional loadout system that many developers attempt to incorporate into their online multiplayer originated from Call of Duty. This was the first time players had an in-depth ability to customize their equipment for online multiplayer. The addition of perks and killstreaks had also never been done before and changed the way developers looked at rewarding players for gameplay success.
#2 - Bullet Time / Slow Motion (Max Payne) - Other games had incorporated slow motion but never before had a developer made it the key selling point for marketing. Inspired by Hong Kong Action Cinema Director, John Woo, the game strategically did so because they knew the Matrix Trilogy was being developed at the same time and would resonate well with fans. This brilliant marketing strategy led to the great success of selling more than 7.5 million copies.

Fans of the Sonic Universe took very well to the idea of raising an interactive virtual pet throughout the gameplay experience. It brought a whole new world of thinking to fans of the video game industry. Nostalgia is a beautiful thing and Sega nailed it on the head by creating these In-Depth virtual pets that could be completely customized to fit the personality characteristics that the player enjoyed.
