If you're looking to start modding Starbound 1.0, this is an excellent mod to start with. So come and watch the first episode of Starbound 1.0 Mod Spotlight featuring Gardenbot2!

***

The Gardenbot mod helps automate this process with no less than three different robots that you can plop down on any patch of dirt and watch as they convert it into a working farm; they’ll just need seeds to get it started. These three gardening bots in this Starbound mod are:

Model 80—which is your basic gardenbot that will till the land, water the soil, plant crops, harvest them, and then replant seeds.

Model 81—which also collects ores that it may come across, and

Model 82—which not only farms but can also replant grass. Just keep in mind that it needs to be next to blocks with grass still growing on them so that it knows what to plant.

Now, the mod offers a number of accessories to make your automated farm run more smoothly:

First, you want to get a bin or some other container to store seeds and crops—the gardenbots will automatically take out seeds and deposit crops once they are harvested.

Second, you will need a way to control the area within which the gardenbots will work because without anything to stop them, they will try to turn the whole of the planet’s surface into a farm. The mod offers three options for corralling your bots—the lawn gnome, the scarecrow, and the garden marker. All three work pretty much the same way: just put them down and the bots will not go past them.

Once you set up your area, your bin and seeds, and your boundary markers, you can turn the bots on by highlighting them and pressing the “use” key. Then just sit back and watch as they start farming for you.

Once you have farming taken care of, it’s time to look what else this mod automates: cutting down trees and forestry. Model 86 is a lumberjack bot that will cut down trees, gather wood, and plant saplings. It functions very much like the gardenbots—so, for example, if you want a tree farm in a particular space, you’ll need to use boundary markers to define where the bot should not go. You can also put down a Wood Shed so that the bot has someplace to toss the raw lumber and saplings. With one or more Model 86s operating, you are almost guaranteed never to run out of wood.

Before looking at the last major function of this mod, let’s quickly talk about security: You need to protect your farms and bots. One possibility is to enclose them completely so that nothing can crawl or fly into them. As an alternative, though, you can pop down a few Model 87 bots—sentry bots—that will patrol your farms and attack anything stupid enough to wander in uninvited. As with the other bots, it will obey your boundary markers, meaning that it won’t just run off looking for things to shoot.

Finally we come to what may be the most amusing feature of Gardenbot2—the Model 49 bots. These are automated mining robots that will dig down into the planet and start hollowing it out. They work very simply: put down one (or more) Model 49s, activate them, and watch them start digging.

As the bots dig down, they will create a shaft with platforms, lights, and material bins. They will also shore up the sides of the shaft to make sure that nothing can wander or fall in. Just make sure you follow the Model 49s as they dig down—Starbound’s engine doesn’t update objects if they’re a certain distance away from the player.

After descending down, the Model 49s will begin constructing horizontal pathways out from the central shaft. This can result in a very complex mine and—given enough Model 49s—a mine that is very efficient at collecting a planet’s resources.

When you’re done with any of the bots in this mod, you can just bash them to death with a weapon or swipe at them with a bugnet. You’ll pick up the bot and any items that were in its inventory.

So, with all that said, there is really just one question left: where can you get all of these things? Well, aside from crafting them, all of the bots, storage crates, and boundary markers are available from the Terramart at the Outpost. The prices aren’t too high, but they’re not too cheap either. All in all, this mod is designed as something you get in the mid-early game so that you can continue completing quests or growing your colony—it’s not something you’ll be able to plop down right after you wake up on your ship.
