Garou: Mark of the Wolves - Arcade (1999)
Same year as Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, which I just posted for comparison. I always remembered this being an incredibly well animated game and it didn't disappoint, but sitting right next to SF3 you can see that it's not quite at the same level. It is fair to point out how ahead of its time the Neo Geo was, because in 1999 this was released to existing hardware and was at least competitive with SF3. Capcom had to create the brand new CPS3 arcade platform in 97 to keep up.
What I don't remember is this game being so stiff to control. It's not stiff in that it's hard to move around...it's that the moves feel like they have no leeway. I'm working with an arcade stick and that's just not how I grew up playing fighters. I was a d-pad person all the way because that's what I had. I started with SF2T and MK2 on the SNES, so that button setup just felt natural. I even used a joypad on the computer. I remember playing this just fine with a joypad, but I had all kinds of difficulty pulling things off today. If it looks like I'm just spamming a button while standing still, I am. I'm just trying to get a move working. I felt the adjustment in SF3 hard, but not as hard as here.
I do miss this series, though. Fatal Fury has a lot of titles to it, but they just stopped at this point and I'd love to see SNK use their characters outside of the KOF series. Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting could have a fighting game to themselves without the KOF crew, or it'd be amazing to see them take the IPs and put them to different uses. I'd love to see a Terry/Rock beat 'em up, a Team Ikari action shooter, or an adventure game starring the SNK Gals Fighterss. It'd be a lot of fun to put out some smaller but fun and fanservicey budget titles with these characters. It's funny...they pulled all their IPs together for KOF and then...the IPs just did nothing after that. What good is an IP if all it does it turn into a fighting game character?
OK that got off the rails. Mark of the Wolves is awesome. Play it.
