I can't really afford to play every single version of Garry's Mod version right now, but maybe in the future. But in the meantime, might as well just say the interesting version history here, from the second version on.

The Physgun was finally added in GMod 2, although it uses the standard Gravity Gun model, while the supercharged Gravity Gun is still itself. GMod 3 gave the Shotgun the ability to place wheels. GMod 3a finally gave gm_construct textures, taking place mostly in an outside area with walls around and not just a white box. The map would change throughout the updates. GMod 4 added multiplayer support, and the spawning of primitive shapes from the buttons. GMod 5 ditches the buttons and finally gives us its signature spawn menu. GMod 6 introduces new VGUIs, some for game information and some for changing object properties as well as faceposing, and the weapons are more of tools this time around. In addition, the spawn menu is sorted. GMod 7 mainly updated building. GMod 8 has another VGUI appearance. GMod 9 was one of the biggest updates of Garry's Mod, as it introduced Lua scripting into the game, which allowed users to make their own addons, like ragdolls, weapons, and gamemodes. In addition, the Tool Gun was added, which combined all tools into a single gun, while the HL2 weapons had their original properties restored. GMod 10 was released as a paid game on Steam, originally version 9.1 of the game, although GMod 9.0.4 was still available for free download, making GMod 9 the last free iteration of Garry's Mod. As the Steam release was the game they were working on now, the whole game was updated to GMod 11, although GMod 10 was also archived by others. GMod 12 added the Toybox, which was a community mod sharing system in-game where users could make the entities spawn right in their game, without the need to download it. These Toybox addons were temporarily installed onto your game, so the addon files would be deleted if the game was restarted.

The current version is Garry's Mod 13. Many of the menus make use of HTML, and also comes with its own server browser, but I don't use that. It also supports the Steam Workshop, which replaced the Toybox from GMod 12. I had a bunch of Workshop addons installed, but I unsubscribed from them all because they were killing my disk space. Except for one, though.

In fact, Garry's Mod is now considered a full game, and not just a modification, due to the large community and playerbase. Many players are still using GMod for many things today.

A successor to Garry's Mod is being developed by Facepunch Studios, known as "s&box", running on Source 2. It was originally being developed with Unreal Engine.

The main reason for Garry to update GMod is his fear of his game getting beaten by JBMod, as well as the JBMod fans that mainly hated on him and GMod. The mod itself was originally made out of pure frustration for JB55's incompetence, where he barely made updates for his game. I think Garry is still giving the game updates out of spite for the haters.
