The plot of Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards revolves around Kirby helping a fairy from an alien planet find the crystal shards. The crystal was shattered by an evil force called Dark Matter. The story begins when Dark Matter invades Ripple Star, a planet populated by fairies. The fairy Ribbon flees with a sacred crystal, but Dark Matter shatters it and spreads it across the galaxy. Kirby agrees to help retrieve the shards and defeat Dark Matter.
