[GD Level Showcase #4] Jitterbug by SirHadoken
Fourth video :) This time, we're taking a look at a level from a really famous creator, SirHadoken!
~ Summary ~
In general, I really liked this level! The coin routes (which are the focus of the level) are pretty good (but not flawless) and really tough! I had some trouble to find them and I had to look into the editor to see how it worked. Unfortunately for me, I saw too late that there was big hints for the coins above the beginning of the level (these hints can be seen only in the editor) and I spent some time looking for the collectibles and triggers to see how the routes worked... Though, it was worth it, as I found a "glitchy way" to do the 3rd route, and therefore, to get the 3rd coin. This glitched route can be seen in the video. Anyway, I had lots of fun with the level, great job to you, SirHadoken! :)
~ Gameplay ~
Not much to say here, the gameplay (without the coins) is really good! If I had to point out one downside of the gameplay without coin routes, it would be the beginning that has some weird movements and that requires a bit of memorization. And, personally, I'm not really a fan of memorization in a 5* level. That's really a minor flaw though, the gameplay is really fun anyway!
~ Decoration ~
The decoration is good and fits the song as well. I can't even think of one downside for the decoration... maybe the block design that is only made of white from 62 to 71%? I'm not sure if that can even be considered as a downside...
~ Coins ~
Here we go. The coins. They are simply CRAZY. You can only get one coin per run, as the routes for them only allow you to go for one. So, let's just analyze their common points, then we'll analyze their specificites.
First, the common points:
-You need to trigger a red button in the first part to unlock one of the routes. The way they are introduced is pretty clever: one of them can be seen easily at 10%. A player that wants the coins will then try to step on it. Doing so will display "Route II open", which means that there are probably other buttons before (since it doesn't unlock Route I but Route II instead). The player will then search for other buttons and eventually find the 3 needed. I'm not sure if all of this was made in purpose by SirHadoken to help the player find the buttons while still hiding them pretty well, but if that was on purpose, that was definitely clever.
-Then, the player may have to do specific stuff for the coins, depending on the route they took.
-From 23 to 25%, there are four numbers. The player has to jump when the number of their route shows up. I'm not really a fan of this for two reasons: first, there is no hint to indicate that you have to interact with these numbers. Second, there are actually four numbers and three routes, which makes it harder to do a link between the two.
-After this, the player has to do even more specific stuff depending on the routes.
-From 73% onward, there isn't any specific stuff depending on the routes anymore. The player has to collect the green key at 75% by pressing the jump orb that was just before really late. This key opens a path at 90%, path where the coin you went for can be finally collected. This path is definitely harder than the normal route.
Now, let's talk about the specificites of each route: well... I can't actually talk about them here. YouTube doesn't let me, as the description is considered as "too long"... Anyway, for the analysis of each of the coin routes (a.k.a. the end of the description), go here: https://pastebin.com/Gy63nLwv
