Gear Cube Unboxing & First Impressions Review
Because this is a knock-off puzzle, I am not going to give any links to where you can purchase the knock-off, but here is a link to Meffert's where you can purchase the item from a legal seller: http://www.mefferts.com/products/details.php?lang=en&category=13&id=331
The knock-off cost $14 plus $3 shipping, compared to $36 for a Meffert's gear cube.
Full review: This puzzle is an amazing puzzle. It is very easy to solve and feels great in your hands. While this is a knock-off, is still very high-quality and does not feel cheap at all. Once it is tensioned and oiled correctly, it works PERFECTLY. I put some olive oil inside of mine and now it turns effortlessly. It uses a 3x3x3 core, and acts like a 3x3x3, except that you can only do 180 degree turns, not 90 degree turns like a 3x3x3. Also, when you turn a side, the other side turns in the opposite direction, so you are really moving 2 sides at a time. Personally, I do not like the stickers on it. It is the normal rubik's stickering, but has purple instead of white. Also, the inner edges are unstickered, ultimately making the puzzle easier. I would recommend ordering some Fisher-style stickers (http://cubesmith.com/gearcubefishnewset.jpg) from Cubesmith to improve the appeal and difficulty of the puzzle. I DO NOT SUPPORT PURCHASE OF KNOCK-OFF PUZZLES. I am not going to give any reasons of why I do not support it, but you can come to that conclusion yourself. Oskar van Deventer works very hard to design his cubes and deserves every bit of money, and when you buy a knock-off item, you are taking money away from him that he should have earned. This is also originally named the "Caution Cube" by Oskar, because he got his finger caught in one of the gears (which still hasn't happened to me after hours of play with the cube)
