High Seas Havoc has been uncharitably called "a Sonic ripoff" by some reviewers. I can to some degree understand the complaint given it's a side scrolling platform game featuring a cute mascot character (in this case a seal instead of a hedgehog), but they forgot to "rip off" the one thing a Sonic-like game should have -- TIGHT CONTROLS. Honestly there's a lot going for this game -- the graphics are really nice (parallax scrolling and all), there are some whimsical Tom & Jerry style pratfalls, the soundtrack is pleasant to listen to, and overall it feels like they were THAT CLOSE to making a great game.
