Genetic entropy is the fact that the mutation rate is high and most mutations are too subtle for natural selection (differential reproduction) to see. This means the majority of mutations are nearly-neutral and slightly deleterious. Over time, the genetic load of species increases. Genetic degeneration is inevitable.
Proponents of evolution argue for observed genetic degeneration in humans largely being the result of relaxed selection. Humans take care of each other. We take care of the sick. Therefore, those with large mutations that cause serious disease may still be able to pass on their genes through reproduction. But in the wild, these mutations would not be passed on, since animals with highly deleterious mutations are removed from the equation through selection (by being eaten by other animals for example). The wild sees more intense selection that the human population. A zebra born with 1 leg shorter than the rest will most likely be dinner for a lion. This is an organism that will not pass on their genes. Selection is essentially about which organisms are reproducing the most and which are passing on their genes to progeny.
The problem with this apparent challenge to the reality of genetic degeneration is that it misses the point of the matter. The problem for species-wide change or forward evolution has to do with the low-impact mutations, and not the large mutations that selection can see. It is the slightly deleterious mutations that accumulate unchecked in both humans and the wild. It is true that large mutations may propagate in the human population due to relaxed selection. But genetic entropy has never been about the high-impact mutations.
A high-impact mutation is akin to the engine of your car suddenly jumping into the backseat of the vehicle. This would destroy the vehicle. This is a problem large enough to prevent any further use or function of the automobile. Low-impact or slightly deleterious mutations are akin to the rust spots that build up on your vehicle over time. They can also be compared to single spelling mistakes accumulating in a book the size of an encyclopedia. On their own, rust molecules, and isolated typographical errors in a text, are inconsequential. But as they accumulate, the car is destroyed, and the message of a book is lost. This is what we see in the genomes of biological organisms. These nearly-neutral mutations accumulate more and more over time to the point where a species exists in continuous genetic decline. These mutations are not seen by natural selection and are therefore subject to genetic drift. They spread and degenerate. This puts shelf lives on genomes, which means species could not have existed for millions of years nor will they be able to persist for millions of years into the future. The problem of deleterious mutation accumulation means biology must be young. And since biology is reflected all throughout the geologic column (in the form of fossils), the earth's rock strata must also be young!
In summary, the existence of relaxed selection in human beings is not a rebuttal to genetic degeneration. Relaxed selection only tells us that large mutations (that selection can see) may accumulate more in humans than in the various animal species found in the wild. The concept of genetic entropy has always been and always will be about the low-impact mutations. These nearly-neutral mutations accumulate in both humans and in the wild with or without relaxed selection. The challenge for the evolutionary community to address has to do with the low-impact mutations that spread through genetic drift and degenerate over time. What type of selection can be invoked to stop the eventual deterioration of biological organisms over generations? What type of selection can rid populations of so many slightly deleterious mutations pouring into populations over time? These are questions that have not received satisfactory answers. This is a challenge not yet addressed sufficiently.
