Genocidal Cyborg M.A.R.K. 13 From Hardware (1990) - An Exceptionally Underrated Sci-Horror Explored
''Welcome to the 21st century. Guess what's become the planet's most endangered species?'' Any guesses? It's us, human beings. Welcome to the British sci-fi, horror cult ''Hardware'', which takes us to the post-apocalyptic world where the human population is facing a major crisis. A powerful cyborg M.A.R.K. 13, an expert in human genocide, is the government's key to the solution. The blue sky is no longer visible, and green grass has been replaced with rubbles everywhere. The dismantled parts of the robot M.A.R.K. 13 wasted no time in reassembling itself and started a massive rampage by initiating gruesome killings. The 1990 film was written and directed by Richard Stanley and starred Dylan McDermott and Stacey Travis. The movie can be considered a cocktail with a few ingredients taken from Ridley Scott's ''Alien'', James Cameron's ''The Terminator'' and the primary ingredient was taken from a short story called ''SHOK''. It was published in 1980 in the “Judge Dredd Annual 1981” by Fleetway Comics. Apparently, Fleetway Comics sued the filmmakers for plagiarism. The theatrical release had not mentioned the inspired storyline “SHOK”. In the 2009 DVD release, "SHOK" was acknowledged as the origin to the story. Writer-director Richard Stanley had made a post-apocalyptic short film of 45 minutes titled ''Incidents in an Expanding Universe'' in his teens. This contributed to the basic theme of his movie. The short film also won the I.A.C. Gold Seal Award. Stanley was shooting a documentary named ''Voice of the Moon'' in Afghanistan during the Soviet-Afghan war. The experience of the war added the extra touch of trauma that we find in the film. Stanley initiated the pre-production of the film immediately after returning from Afghanistan, which was his debut feature film. The inclusion of cameos from Iggy Pop, Carl McCoy, and Lemmy was a surprising element, but that didn't affect the plot of the film.
