Menacing and Mysterious Scorpio Demon From Split Second: Explored - Sir Rutger Hauer's Cult Classic
Back in 1992, directors Tony Maylam and Ian Sharp directed the science fiction/action/horror film Split Second. It was less of a creative collaboration between the two and more of a Maylam getting tired of constant changes in a script written by Gary Scott Thompson and Sharp taking over as a replacement.
The movie is set in the ‘future’ of 2008 where we see a dystopian London. Maybe humans are giving themselves too much credit than necessary because there’s no way people are making technological advancements drastic enough for global warming to take over London in sixteen years. Even in 2021, the process has been slow enough to make many people believe that global warming is not a thing at all.
Add that with a blend of astrology (shoutout to all the Scorpios out there), unnecessary fan service, humor that is so bad that it actually comes off as extremely funny, a low-budget Venom symbiote, and a phenomenal performance by the late Rutger Hauer, Split Second is quite the cult classic.
What set Rutger Hauer apart from many of his peers was the courage that allowed him to venture into his darker side. He has admitted to preferring portraying more villainous characters as evident from his notable roles such as the vampire in Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, the killer in The Hitcher, and a shrewd and cunning prince in Gallivant. His character in the movie - Harley Stone, is not villainous. However, he deals with extensive trauma which Rutger expresses almost flawlessly.
He is most renowned for appearing in Blade Runner as the villain Roy Batty. It would be safe to say that Hauer had a more than memorable career and a legacy that has made its mark on innumerable people.
The cast also comprises Kim Cattrall, Alastair Duncan, Pete Postlethwaite, and Michael J. Pollard. Despite Pollard getting his name mentioned prominently as one of the cast members, his role as the Rat Catcher is quite minimal.
