Remember to always make a balanced army. If you rely too much on high quality specialists, you'll end up overwhelmed by a more diverse army. Saying that though, it's always a good idea to have a strong direct unit, like those katana samurai. Also, don't be intimidated by DLC units, this game isn't pay to win, all the DLC stuff is really niche, expensive and can be taken out if you don't let them stay in their element.
