Abstract:When doing the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), faculty bring their disciplinary knowledge to bear on questions of teaching and learning and systematically gather evidence to support their conclusions. SoTL investigations may explore the effectiveness of pedagogical methods, assignments, curricula, or technology, or inquire into student (or faculty) understanding, attitudes, or perceptions of mathematics and its teaching or learning. SoTL is practitioner-driven, aimed at a practitioner audience for the purpose of better understanding and improving teaching and learning. This session will introduce participants to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) in mathematics and help them begin to develop a researchable question. Participants will select a teaching problem, question, or experiment of their own and begin to transform it into a question for scholarly investigation. They can start with something from their past teaching experience, or they can choose to explore a question based on new approaches to teaching ODEs that SIMIODE has introduced them to. They will learn about ways to refine their initial question to make it more researchable by considering the SoTL question taxonomy (What works? What is? What could be?), defining terms, and using their disciplinary knowledge. Participants will learn about resources for furthering their work, be informed about human subjects requirements, and be encouraged to identify collaborators.
