Abstract: This presentation introduces ideas of place/land and how our connections to land shape our relationships with each other and with mathematics. I explore how place and mathematics can help us, as educators, respond to pressing issues such as climate change, geopolitical unrest, and land degradation, as well as efforts that focus on equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization. How might we support students in learning to use mathematics for reading (making sense of the world) and writing (changing the world) so that all, human and more-than-human, can truly flourish? Cynthia Nicol is a mathematics educator and professor in the Faculty of Education at University of British Columbia (UBC) and holds the David Robitaille Professorship in Mathematics and Science Education. Her research includes exploring approaches to connecting math, community, and culture for all students and especially for students in remote, rural and Indigenous communities.
