Ghost of Tsushima is an open world third-person action adventure set in feudal Japan...and that's all there is to say about this game, really. It does all the things that a modern open world title is expected to do (collectibles, crafting, side quests, optional platforming challenges etc.), but with few meaningful additions or changes compared to other games in the same genre over the last five years or so. Tsushima's main selling point is arguably its vibrant water color-esque visuals, but even though there's a lot of HDR eye candy on display this is not a better-looking game than, say, Horizon: Zero Dawn which was released almost three years ago now.

After the mind-numbingly formulaic Assassin's Creed Odyssey and atrociously slow-paced Red Dead Redemption II, I don't even know what I would want out of an open world game anymore (although it's worth noting that Far Cry 3 still holds up remarkably well, despite being responsible for so many of the tropes I can't stand in newer games). Ghost of Tsushima's stylish but utterly forgettable take on the genre gets me nowhere closer to answering that question.
