At Cedar Temple, a monk tells Jin that Norio brought Enjo's ashes to the cemetery at Guardian's Ridge. Norio confides that he found Kharchu's location, but Jin advises that Cedar Temple not only needs his leadership, but revenge is not always the best path for a monk. Norio's guilt prompts him to doubt his leadership abilities and avenging his brother consumes him to the point where he threatens scavengers as they're running away. Jin and Norio make camp where the scavengers were looting, but the next morning, Jin wakes up to find Norio gone. When Jin finally catches up with Norio, he discovers how far his rage has gone, having burned everything at the Mongol camp, including Kharchu. Jin reminds Norio that he had promised to never swing his blade in anger, and Norio confesses that seeking revenge felt good and he could never return to Cedar Temple – he could never go back to life before the Mongols. Jin assures him that they can never go back but stresses the importance of keeping faith and moving forward. Norio eventually agrees, and thus becomes the new Guardian of Cedar Temple.
