Ubisoft Researcher Morgane Schreiber shares the user research processes based on Self Determination Theory (SDT), and their contribution to the production and improvement of Ghost Recon: Wildlands. The talk will discuss how this process enabled the Ubisoft team to better understand players’ motivations and increase their engagement in the game. Morgane’s presentation will also cover how the game was defined through the lens of SDT, and secondly how the game was evaluated through this same lens. This talk will outline the SDT theory and methodology, and also the overall process undertaken by the Ubisoft research team, which included workshops and game decompositions, and two forms of user testing through the lens of SDT.

The results of these research methods brought actionable findings to help the team tweak the design of the game. Morgane will share concrete examples documenting how Ghost Recon: Wildlands progressed throughout development, and how we were able to help the team support their design intentions using these approaches.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands is a tactical first-person shooter in which drug cartel ‘Santa Blanca’ aims to create the biggest Narco-State in history, and is among the biggest-selling games of 2017.
