Ghosted - Movie Review
"Ghosted" (2023) directed by Dexter Fletcher is the first ever Apple exclusive film I've seen, and while it was quite mixed quality wise, I found myself having a really fun time and was thoroughly entertained. It probably helps that I got to see this film for free using their 7 day trial period.
Cole Turner (Chris Evans) is a humble farmer. One day while covering for his friend's shop, he meets an incredibly beautiful woman named Sadie Rhodes (Ana de Armas), and the two end up hitting it off despite some initial arguing about plants and responsibility. Sadie ghosts Cole, meaning she abruptly ceases contact without any notice or reason, and the lovesick Cole travels to London to surprise her and win her back. Sadie turns out to be a C.I.A. operative and Cole gets involved in her bio-weapon operation.
As I just summed up the plot above, it is clear to me that this is the biggest issue. The story is paper thin and difficult to get invested in. The villain is straight up forgettable and does not give off the intended effect he was supposed to. I was however invested in Cole & Sadie's relationship, so if this leaned more into the romance / drama territory like it was at the beginning as opposed to the generic spy adventure stuff, it could have been a legendary film and a great win for Apple.
Ana de Armas is in my opinion the single most attractive woman in the entire world, or at least in the top 10. I follow her career closely because I am a great admirer of both her beauty and her acting talent, so I obviously had a great time in this because of her. I am a fan of alternative female heroines that shake up the formula a bit, and this is what that was. The film is also extremely funny and that is thanks to Chris Evans and the large list of memorable cameo guest surprise actors which I won't spoil for you here.
Ghosted is objectively a meh spy film that doesn't do too many unique things, but the comedy and romance as well as the cast elevate this otherwise downright bad story into something really enjoyable. I can recommend this one to you and I would consider watching it again myself.
