So, what are people's thoughts on Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection? I only found out quite recently it'd been ported to PS4 from the Switch and as a humongous fan of Ghouls 'n Ghosts on the Megadrive I thought I'd check it out.

Now, Ghouls 'n Ghosts has got a reputation for being absolutely hard as nails, and whilst it was certainly a tricky game back in the day, I didn't ever find it got to the point it was so ridiculously hard I just wanted to give up and throw my controller at the TV. The gameplay always felt rewarding and memorisation of enemy patterns would (mostly) get you through. Most of the time when you died, it felt like your fault rather than the game's.

The difficulty in the new game feels beyond insane though, even just on the 'normal' difficulty level. The amount of cheap unavoidable deaths I've had, just because of the sheer volume of enemies and projectiles the game is chucking in my direction is really stripping a lot of the enjoyment out of it. The fact you can't control your jump at all once you've started it feels like an archaic gameplay mechanic that should've been updated (yeah, I know it's authentic, but not everything from the past is good). Cuphead managed to be hard as nails whilst still giving your main character tons of maneuverability.

Someone in a Facebook group I'm on called it "Cheap as fuck", which to me implies poor level design and gameplay mechanics resulting in cheap deaths, which is exactly the issue I'm finding with the game. Ghouls 'n Ghosts on the Megadrive wasn't cheap. It was difficult, but great, without ever making you think the CPU was being a cheating motherfucker and that generally the death was your own fault for not being careful.

I also hate the fact the boss characters look like some kind of 20 year old flash animation, with clearly separate segmented bodies and limbs. I really want to like it, but I'm finding the updated visual style really unappealing. It's not so bad on the smaller enemies, but it's really noticeable on the bosses. Shame they didn't get Lizardcube to do the visuals and come up with some beautiful 2D cartoon style visuals like in Wonderboy The Dragon's Trap. The new versions of the classic music are great though.

Thoughts?
