Dad of Boi is back and he is bigger and badder than ever, well sort of. God of War Ragnarok has hit shelves and its quite clear to see that Kratos fever is sweeping the nation as the game had been out for what a week before nominations for this year's Game Wards came out with Gow of War topping the charts in several categories.
Gameplay. Oh boy the gameplay and I actually have some issues. THis is the one area of the game in which I have any criticisms. Granted its been awhile since I played God of War 2018 but in my mind I remember that game being much more forgiving than Ragnarok. You start the game with all of the important bits that you had at the end of 2018 so from the get go you have access to the leviathan axe, the blades of chaos, various shield techniques and various traversal items. Throughout the game you will acquire even more traversal items and combat options.
Feel free to call me whatever you wish but I did not jive with the combat in Ragnarok. It felt to me as though all of the enemies hit too damn hard and Kratos is always struggling to keep up. Once new enemies types are introduced who have abilities to reduce your maximum health and spam that ability constantly throughout the game it becomes very concerning. I spent a great amount of time running around during combat looking for health pickups and rage boosters. Kratos is not great at dodging. Default button mapping ties his dodge to the X button. Thing is if you only tap X he doesn't really dodge, he just kinda lunges to the side and a lot of enemies have wide swinging attacks or AOE effects. If you want a full on dodge roll you need to double tap X wait for him to finish his roll and then double tap again if you want another roll.
As far as traversal goes I'll keep it short and say its good throughout most of the game, great in some places and annoying in a few places. There is alot of environmental variety in Ragnarok as you travel through the nine realms but most of it is window dressinging. Traversal comes down to wall climbing, hook shots with the blades of chaos, puzzle solving with the axe's freeze ability and some other mechanics I won't go into because talking about the mechanics necessitates spoilers. Traversal is fun the first time through the main dungeons and exploring the open areas but I will say backtracking in some areas during the endgame can be annoying because you may know exactly where you want to go but you still have to do a lot of the puzzles and wall climbs again. This isn't a big issue though because that's all optional content.
Story. Oh boy this is where it gets sticky. I want to talk about Ragnarok's story so much because this is where the game really shines. I will however refrain from going into any story spoilers. Basically things pickup about 2 or 3 years after the end of 2018. Freya is still pissed at kratos and Atreus for how things went down with Baldur, Odin and Thor are getting in the mix as Odin attempts to pull of his master plan and our intrepid heroes are doing everything they can to figure out how to survive with the shadow of prophecy lingering over their heads. 2018 showed us an evolution of kratos as he tried to change from the angry pantheon slaying patricidal maniac he was to a single parent. Ragnarok takes the story even further. There were some moments in the game that seriously had me choked up but of course I won't be going into them. Let me just say that Kratos has never been better than he is here. Christopher Judge really outdid himself.
Atreus has got his own story threads. You play certain sections of the game as him but I never really cared for his character. A Lot of that has to do with just being a fan of teenage angst. That said, while I was not a fan of Atreus in this game, seeing his impact on the others around him is outstanding.
All of the side characters from the previous game are back and their stories are expanded in ways you wouldn't believe. The cast of 2018 was pretty small, pretty much just Kratos, Atreus, Freya, Brok, Sindri, Mimir, Baldur and the terror twins. Now though we get to see a real ensemble cast who each get their own backstories, personal connections and contributions to the main plot. Freya and Brok are easily my favorite characters after Kratos.
Trust me by the end of the game you are going to feel something and if you don't then you're a monster.
