A Lot of the games that make the biggest splash are the action packed big budget cinematic titles like God of War, Elden Ring, Horizon etc. It's easy to understand why these games have such mainstream appeal. Whether its because the big budget graphics are easy to look at and instantly recognize what the game is about the companies behind them being able to afford a big marketing push, big set piece games will always do the best. Smaller titles with conventional playstyles typically don't do as well but many manage to find a niche following, some however are able to become a breakout success despite the odds.
Right now the game everyone is gushing about is Pentiment from Obsidian games. Pentiment takes place in 16th century Bavaria, starring an aspiring artist as he seeks to uncover the dark truths behind a series of murders in a small country town. Not content to be a simple point and click adventure presented in a pixel format or simple text adventure Pentiment is played as if you are reading through a manuscript of the period complete with fully stylized backgrounds, script and 3D figures that look 2D and as if they could jump right off the screen of a Monty Python and the holy grail sketch. I mean seriously I wish I could have been there for this game's pitch meeting.
Pentiment's charm goes beyond just presentation however. The game is rooted in real history and so much of it tries to stay true to the period. It tries so much so in fact that at any point in the game you can click on proper nouns in conversation in order to get a pop out definition.
Pentiment star Andreas Maler. Maler? Muller? I don't know, I don't speak German. He is an aspiring artist from Nuremberg wrapping up his studies at an Abbey in a small Bavarian town. He plans to move back to Nuremberg to start the next chapter in his life as a master artist soo but before that can happen a grisly murder takes place and he as an outsider seemingly is the only one in a position to do something about it. I won't go into the story and further because this is basically a point and click visual novel.
Gameplay is made up of moving around town, examining points of interest, talking to townsfolk and trying to piece together the various clues and questions thrown your way through investigation and interview. If you so choose you can simply check the map in the menu to determine where you should be going at any time and just get the main points of the story done or you cant take your time and really get a sense of all the town folk.
I must congratulate the team who worked on Pentiment because they really did an excellent job of individualizing each townsperson. You can get town know everyone in town from the charitable Baker Ulrich, the Short tempered but well meaning farmer Peter, the too shy for his own good Blacksmith Endris and so on. Pentiment is billed as a choice matter game and I'd say that is half right. Whatever you do the game is still going to reach its final common destination and not much will change for the character you play as but you can manage to change things from a lot of the villagers in small ways that you might not even catch until later. How much and who you impact though can be tricky because for the majority of the game there is a time limit on what you can do and how many people you interact with.
So we have a beautiful game with alot of fleshed out characters. Should you buy this game? Honestly if this were a full priced $60 game I'd say no. While I enjoyed the presentation and story I felt that my choices didn't really affect the main driving plot. As well the plot didn't seem to really have any divergent routes. I compare Pentiment to other titles like Suzerain or The life and suffering of Sir Brante and I have got to say those others do a much better job at changing the main plot according to your choices.
All that said I can easily still recommend Pentiment because it is not a $60 game. You can either get pentiment free if you are currently subscribed to game pass or purchase it separately for $20. $20 is an amazing price point for this game. It took me approximately 12 hours to beat and while I'll say there isn't a whole lot of reason to replay it other than to see what small differences I can make, the amount of story you are getting for the buy-in is great. I can honestly say I'm surprised, I think Obsidian and Microsoft could have easily asked for $30 and I'd still have been happy.
Pentiment is getting a huge amount of traction online and while I believe that a lot of that has to do with big daddy xbox dropping money on advertising that doesn't change that Pentiment is a good game. I do think I have played games with better stories and choice systems but for what you are paying for Pentiment is an easy recommendation.
