Gods Against Machines is a singleplayer roguelite kind of an RTS that leans into some god game themes and mechanics which is going to be released by a small, 3 people, indie team on Steam very soon.
The ways in which you fight these invaders is by spells, minions and elemental forces of nature. Because there are four different gods you can choose to be, there are 16 unique spells for each to keep the gameplay fresh and give you a reason to try them all out. On top of that each god has a unique mechanic which combines several offensive or defensive features to produce a novel and powerful effect. There is also a sidekick god called Gaia, the Mother of Nature. She takes part in base building and even more crucially you can upgrade her powers as you go through the game, so that is where the roguelite progression elements come into play.
When it comes to minions, these are all kinds of animal summons, birds, bears, spiders, and also all sorts of elementals, the crucial thing is that you don’t take control of them but they automatically attack. This part actually breaks a key RTS game genre tenant, and it is why I called this a kind of an RTS game.
The elements also help you in another way, like how newly opened vulcanos lob fireballs at enemy units and buildings, or mana crystals recharge your pool of mana which is your most important resource. This is the base building part of the game and it is the same on each map type, moderate, desert, ice or swamplands.
These metal enemies have backup too. In the form of huge robots or spaceships which are considered bosses in Gods Against Machines. They have a lot of HP as is expected from a boss, are slow and lumbering most of the time but are also capable of summoning their own units to the field around them which makes them much harder to take down.
Once you do manage to take them down, and the enemy cities, you will discover that there are some looting mechanics in this game. These destroyed enemy buildings spawn evacuation drones that may contain stuff you can turn and use against the enemy.
