Going the Distance (Learning) with Games
Distance learning has been growing in importance and prevalence, particularly since COVID-19 has reshaped the need for online education. One key tool educators are turning to for remote learning is games.
This panel brings together speakers from around the U.S. government with backgrounds in creating and implementing games for distance learning across disciplines to share their experience and lessons learned. Represented organizations include the Wilson Center, whose latest game, the Fiscal Ship, is part of a legacy of games about the federal budget that have reached over 2 million worldwide and was recently highlighted in the New York Post as a top educational tool for COVID-19; the Lab at United States Office of Personnel Management, a government innovation team powered by Human Centered Design; and the Smithsonian Institution, which has been working to create games, simulations, and other educational materials for distance learning.
Featured Panelists: Dr. Elizabeth Newbury [Director of the Serious Games Initiative, Wilson Center], Cody Coltharp [Digital Interactive Designer, Smithsonian Center for Learning and Digital Access (SCLDA)], Sarah Hughes [Communications Designer, The Lab at OPM], Reuben Brenner-Adams [Interactive Developer, Smithsonian Science Education Center (SSEC)]
