Here's a little game which was originally an online minigame until it was ported to the PC by Reflexive, simply titled "Gold Miner". The game is just as basic as the title: you play as a miner who has to earn as much cash as possible by grabbing gold, diamonds and other goodies. The miner stands at the top of the screen with his winch and a grabbing claw which swings back and forth. The idea is to send the claw down into the mine and time it as good as you can so it lines up with the objects scattered around the mine. Once the claw touches something, the miner reels that item up to the surface with his winch. This takes more or less time depending on the item: a coin or a gem gets pulled up very fast, while a large gold nugget or a rock can take up to 10 seconds to reach the surface. Once the item reaches the surface you earn more or less cash depending on the object. Anything you grab is worth SOME money, even if it's as little as 1$. A gold nugget can earn as much as 500$, depending on its size. The smallest nuggets are worth 50$, medium ones are 100$, large are 250$ and the largest ones 500$. Aside from gold, other valuable items are the different colored gems, worth 600$ a piece; silver coins which let you play the slot machine in between levels; mystery bags with a red question mark on them, which contain either a stick of dynamite, strength potion or a random sum of cash; hamsters carrying a gem (if they're frozen they're worth even more !) and green elves with pickaxes. They pace slowly from left to right or vice versa, swinging their pickaxe and will destroy any item they come in contact with in their path. They are worth 100$ each. Others items are worth far less: the most common are the rocks - they take a lot of time to reel up and are not worth the effort (10$ at best !). Other items are regular hamsters (worth 2$ each), bats flying up and down in underground tunnels found in some levels (15$ each), bones, skulls and TNT barrels. The TNT barrels explode if your claw hits them on the way down and they also destroy any items nearby. If there are 2 or more barrels close together, detonating one also sets off the others around, causing a chain reaction which could wipe out 90% of the items on screen, so avoid this when there are gems or gold nuggets nearby, especially if you're not close to reaching your cash goal for that level ! Fun fact: when you hit a barrel and it blows up, the only thing that will be left of it in your claw is a scrap piece of wood, which is still worth 1$ :)) The goal of each level is to reach the amount of money shown in the top-left corner before the timer runs out - you get 60 seconds each time. When the timer runs out or when you click the "Exit level" button, you advance to the next mine provided of course you gathered an equal or higher amount than the goal. The game ends when you fail to reach your target, which increases with each level. Before you tackle the next mine, you first visit a shop where you get to buy different items to help you on your next run. There may be more or less items for sale at once - sometimes there's only a single item for sale, while other times there may be a table full of stuff for you to choose from. The prices also seem to be random, even for the same item. These are: sticks of dynamite to blow up useless items you grab, ice machines to freeze all living creatures on screen which also increases their value (you can only have one of these at a time, unlike the dynamite sticks), shamrocks ("4-leaf clovers" if you prefer) which increase the chances of getting a stick of dynamite or strength potion in a grab bag, strength potion which helps the miner reel up heavy objects faster than usual and finally gem polish, a book on bones and a book on rocks, which increase the value of the gems, bones, or rocks respectively, but these can be a rip-off sometimes, because if you buy a "Bones" book for instance and the next level has no bones in it, then you've just wasted your money because the books are only in effect for one level ! The same goes for the gem polish and the shamrock: just because you buy an item, doesn't mean you'll get to use in the next level. Keep in mind that you also have to meet your target amount, which is higher every time, so don't just buy everything in the store if you don't need it ! Use the money sparingly and if you feel you're low on cash and won't meet the next goal, just don't buy anything at all ! Other than that, the game is really simple: the graphics aren't spectacular and there's no music whatsoever (unless you count the jingles between levels) but despite its mere simplicity, it's a pretty addicting little game, because you'll want to keep playing to see just how far you can make it. You could also challenge your friends to try and beat your score. Bottom line: great time killer, give it a try !
