Released in 1990, Silver Surfer is notorious for being one of the hardest games in the NES library. I decided to test this by making this playthrough and what I can say is that it's not that easy indeed. The main reason why it's so difficult is because every hazard in the game is a one-hit death, even the floors and ceilings, not to mention the truck-load of enemies you have to deal with. However once you upgrade your weapon enough, it's fairly easy, at least for a while because when you die the weapon also goes back to its original power. All I can advise you to do is press down the fire button and never let go. Every level is an endurance and you'll be begging for a powerup. Powerups come in the form of icons with a letter on them : the "S" icon will give you an extra life, the "F" icon will upgrade your gun, and the "B" icon gives you a bomb which you can use to wipe out all the enemies on screen by pressing "START" (you can never have more than 3 of these bombs). Much like in Mega Man you can choose which level to take on every time. There are 5 levels, with an additional one added after you complete the initial 5. The graphics are not bad, but sometimes it's unclear as to what's a barrier and what you can pass through: the only way to know is to play the game over and over, until you remember what walls or platforms knock you off your board and which ones don't. The soundtrack is fantastic ! It's energetic, fast paced and pretty complex for an 8-bit game. Bottom line: not a bad game overall, but really difficult, hence frustration associated with it.
