With the 78th annual Golden Globe nominations only a week away (Feb. 3), Variety Awards Editors Clayton Davis and Jenelle Riley examine the contenders for the best lead actress category for both drama and comedy or musical in the latest Variety Awards Circuit video.

Frances McDormand leads the drama side of the category for her performance in “Nomadland,” which has been garnering plenty of buzz and critics prizes this year. “I think it may be top two best things she’s ever done,” Davis said. McDormand also stands a chance to be the first woman to be nominated for acting and producing in the same year.

Another top contender is Carey Mulligan in “Promising Young Woman,” which Riley points out would be her first nomination since the 2009 film “An Education.” “I think we’re sort of used to seeing her in corsets and period pieces, and she is just a smart, furious performance,” Riley said. “It’s a woman who’s pretending everything is okay on the outside, thus the fancy nails, but a lot going on in the inside.”
