It's so relieving to hear news of not one, but two new Sonic games coming out next year. I am totally hyped!
With little known about Sonic Project 2017 (other than it's clearly Sonic Generations 2), people are all abuzz about the other announced title, Sonic Mania, which is yet another return to classic form for Sonic. This one goes even further backward however by using Genesis-style graphics again. Honestly, I was not a fan of this, but after seeing the unbelievably good animation, I think I can let it pass.
I have played the classic games now, and I enjoy them very much. But I didn't really like the fact that Sega are still confused and are still desperately trying to please old fans by making a safe formulaic classic Sonic game. But again, the upside to this is that the new ability; the Drop Dash, might be a game changer. Plus we get to play as Tails and Knuckles again. It's been too long. :)
Not to mention that it's really cool that Sonic Mania will be made by people who are passionate fans of the Sonic franchise; a very wise move on Sega's part to let the fans have a turn in making Sonic games. This is especially exciting thanks to the confirmation by the amazing fangames Sonic Before the Sequel and After the Sequel, and that Mania will be made by Christian Whitehead; who remastered Sonic CD, that shows that Sonic is in good hands with responsible fans.
All in all, Sonic Mania should've looked displeasing to me, but even I can't help but feel anticipation for it. It could not only be a game changer, it could be a revolution for Sonic; by having fans have more say and control over development of the games.
