Intended for the N64 Disc system, this was supposed to be a massive project from the creators of EarthBound/Mother. When the N64 Disc System failed it was moved to just the cartridge based system throwing out all plans for the Disc System. While the game was originally planned as a launch title, the team admitted it would need two more years before the project was completed, which halted development on the N64 all together.

With the Gamecube on the horizon Development started from scratch there, still keeping the 3D style in mind. But was also eventually quietly cancelled. Gamers wouldn't be able to play Mother 3 until much later on the GameBoy Advance and only in Japan keeping the series original 2D sprite flair. Eventually Mother 3 received a fan translation so players in the west could also enjoy it.
