Gothic is an action RPG game, the debut project of the German studio Piranha Bytes – a team founded in 1997 by former employees of Greenwood Entertainment. In some countries, including Poland, the discussed title enjoys cult status. The production gave rise to a series developed in subsequent years, and when the brand it represented passed into the hands of THQ Nordic, it also received a full-fledged remake.
Plot
Gothic takes us on a journey to the fantasy kingdom of Myrtana, or more precisely – to the so-called Mining Valley on the island of Khorinis, where the ruler Rhobar II established a penal colony. Those imprisoned in the latter were to work hard mining ore, and escape from this place was to be prevented by an impenetrable, magical barrier from the inside. However, the spell that created it was corrupted, and as a result, it covered the entire valley, imprisoning the convicts, the magicians responsible for it, as well as the ancient evil that had remained hidden under the dome.
During the game, we play the role of an unnamed hero, whom we meet when he is thrown into a penal colony. The protagonist quickly turns out to be the chosen one of the god Innos, whose task is not to work in the mine, but to deal with the ancient threat lurking in the Valley of Mines.
Mechanics
In the Gothic game, we watch the action from a third-person perspective (TPP). An open world was prepared for its needs, which, although not impressive in size, can boast rich content. We will find in it, among others, ancient ruins, mines, an orc village and finally various camps established by convicts.
There are a number of factions in the mining valley, which we can join during the game, thus influencing the course of the plot. The story is driven by quests that push it forward, accompanied by various side quests. By completing them, we travel through the Mining Valley and face numerous opponents. In addition to hostile humans and orcs, we are faced with local fauna (such as wolves, overgrown beetles or scavengers) and other monsters (led by skeletons and demons). Depending on our play style, during dynamic fights we use melee weapons (from one- and two-handed swords to axes, clubs and hammers) or ranged weapons (such as bows and crossbows), as well as magic.
As we progress, we develop our character. By gaining experience, we advance to the next levels, and the points we receive then can be distributed between individual attributes or spent on developing specific skills related to combat and activities useful outside the battlefield (such as opening locks, sneaking or skinning animals). It is worth noting that, unlike most representatives of the genre, we can only do this after finding the right teacher.
In addition, the combat potential of the so-called Nameless One is increased by acquiring better equipment, which includes weapons and armor, as well as various artifacts. New items are found in the game world, purchased from merchants, crafted by ourselves or taken from defeated enemies.
Technical issues
Although the graphic design of Gothic can already be a bit clunky, at the time of release it looked quite solid. However, the atmospheric soundtrack, led by the main theme of the title described, has not aged.
