Are we turning to broader, more socially radical political goals?

"It's the economy, stupid" has been the political truth for decades. But the vote for Brexit and wide support for Corbyn suggest that many would sacrifice growth for social change. Has the economy become less important to us? Are we turning to broader, more socially radical political goals? Or is the weakness of the economy since 2008 the very reason for the shift away from the centre ground?

Vince Cable: Vince Cable is a British politician and Leader of the Liberal Democrats. He is the Member of Parliament for Twickenham and has served as the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills from 2010 to 2015. In May this year, Cable led the Liberal Democrats to their best national electoral performance since the 2010 general election, gaining fifteen seats in the 2019 European Parliament election, running on an anti-Brexit platform under the slogan, "Bollocks to Brexit".

Liz Truss: Liz Truss is a British politician serving as Chief Secretary to the Treasury since 2017. A member of the Conservative Party, she has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for South West Norfolk since 2010. Truss was Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs from 2014 to 2016 and Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor from 2016 until 2017.

Richard Burgon: Richard Burgon is a British Labour Party politician and the Member of Parliament for Leeds East. He is also the Shadow Secretary of State for Justice and Shadow Lord Chancellor. After working as a trade union lawyer, he was elected as the MP for Leeds East at the 2015 general election. Burgon was promoted to Shadow Justice Secretary in June 2016 following the organised mass resignations in protest against the leadership of Corbyn.
