This game was made by Konami 2 years after Gradius and Lifeforce and it's the true sequel to the first one. The game brings back Vic Viper to fight the alien forces of the Bacterian Empire once again. This time the leader and final boss was revealed to be the giant head with the brain named Gofer! The game kept the gameplay from the original Gradius but infused elements from Life Force as well with the weapon system. This game also introduced us to the boss rush which are a series of bosses one after another that you must fight in stage 5. Gradius II also known as Vulcan Venture in arcades outside Japan is a side-scrolling shooter game. Originally released for the arcades in Japan in 1988, it is the sequel to original Gradius and was succeeded by Gradius III. Ports of Gradius II were released for the Family Computer under the shortened title of Gradius II, PC-Engine Super CD-ROM, and the X68000 in Japan. The original arcade version is also included in the Gradius Deluxe Pack compilation for the PlayStation and Sega Saturn and in Gradius Collection for the PlayStation Portable. Here's the story. Two years ago, the planet Gradius was suddenly attacked by a Bacterian invasion fleet. On the brink of defeat, Gradius launched its last hope, the hyper-space fighter Vic Viper. The Vic Viper drove deep into the heart of the enemy forces and destroyed the Bacterian stronghold, the Xaerous Fortress, and brought victory to Gradius. But now, the Bacterian menace is again threatening the planet Gradius. This time, the attack is led by a new enemy — a special unit known as Gofer. The Gradius forces again look to their savior — the Vic Viper — to save them from annihilation.
