268Grand Prix Circuit, developed by Distinctive Software and released in 1988 by Accolade for the Commodore 64, is a Formula One racing simulation that pushed what was possible on 8-bit hardware. In this game you can choose from three different F1 cars — the McLaren MP4/4, Williams FW12, or the Ferrari 187/88C — each with its own balance of speed vs control, making each one feel distinct.
The gameplay includes single races, qualifying rounds, and a full championship mode across real world tracks such as Brazil, Monaco, Germany (Hockenheim), Canada, Italy, Detroit, and Japan (Suzuka). It features damage modeling — bumping or running off track affects handling and adds to a damage bar; once that bar fills, you can be forced out of the race.
Graphically, the C64 version delivers crisp sprite-based visuals with impressive roadside scenery and trackside detail. The menus are well-designed for their time. The music and sound pulses with energy, composed by Kris Hatlelid, including a catchy theme in the intro and atmospheric sound effects during racing.
Grand Prix Circuit remains significant in the retro community as one of the best racing simulations on the C64 — it offers challenging gameplay, a real sense of speed and formula-one immersion, plus lasting nostalgia. It’s often cited among the top tier of Commodore 64 motorsport games.
