Gravitational Waves - Ripples in Space Time
Gravitational waves are ripples in the fabric of space-time itself, caused by the acceleration of massive objects like black holes or neutron stars.
The existence of gravitational waves was first predicted by Albert Einstein in his general theory of relativity, which he published in 1915.
The first direct detection of gravitational waves occurred in 2015 by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) in the United States.
Gravitational waves cause space to stretch and squeeze as they pass through it, similar to how a passing wave on the surface of water can distort its shape.
Unlike other forms of radiation, such as light or radio waves, gravitational waves can pass through objects without being absorbed or scattered. This makes them valuable for observing events that are otherwise hidden from view, like the collision of black holes.
