Great 1080 N64 Performance. Raspberry Pi 4 2250Mhz 5.4 Kernel & test firmware. Retropie 4.6
Retropie installed into Raspbian
Boots straight into Retropie 4.6 without Desktop environment
Cooled with Pimoroni fan shim
Raspberry Pi 4 4gb
My config.txt (needs experimental hardware, adequate cooling and Linux 5.4)

Don’t try to increase the over_voltage setting any further than 6; values above this are ignored unless you also set the force_turbo setting, and doing so toggles a fuse in the SoC which invalidates your warranty.
To get back to Raspbian from Retropie press start quit emulationstation.
To start Raspbian At prompt type: sudo systemctl start lightdm
From the Retropie forums
This test release includes the full KMS GPU driver, which moves some functionality that was previously run on the VideoCore GPU out to the ARM cluster. This is a more standard implementation that will replace the firmware based "fake KMS" driver.

Updating the kernel
https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/linux/kernel/updating.md
The rpi-update utility will download the Linux kernel and Raspberry Pi firmware that are currently being tested and install them onto your Pi. Note that rpi-update does not provide a way to revert the changes that it makes to your system.
After upgrading the kernel, you must reboot your Pi to switch to the updated version.
