## Maids Of All Work
842 of them! Sir William Stanier's class 5 4—60 for the London Midland and Scottish Railway was numerically the largest class of locomotive in Great Britain, and they were always known as "Black 53".
With so many of them, they appeared all over the L.M.S. and British Railways systems, from Wick and Thurso in the north, to Bournemouth in the south. They were truly "Maids of all Work", handling anything from local freight trains to named expresses and everything in between.
Of course, many of this famous class haVe survived into preservation in the 19905, and this programme shows them still ranging widely throughout the British railway scene!
# CONTENTS
5025 — The oldest Black 5 at workin the Scottish Highlands on the Strathspey Railway.
5000 — The "class leader" on the Severn Valley Railway.
5231 — Join the crew of 5231 as she works over the Nene Valley Railway — from preparation on shed to working a train — filmed from the cab and the lineside.
5305 — Another "Scottish" engine — this time in the West Highlands, powering B.R.'s trains from Fort William, and also in Edinburgh.
5407 — The widest-ranging ‘5' after 5305! — seen on the North Wales Coast and the Settle and Carlisle.
44767 and 54528 — The unique Stephenson geared machine and her conventional sister at work over the North Yorkshire Moors.
44871 — Scotland's "Sovereign". On shed at Bo'ness, and working on the Mallaig road.
44932 — B.R.'s 5 (built 1949) The Midland Trust's Black 5 near Glenfinnan, at home at Swanwick, and Westhouses.
