Gridrunner iOS (Pure Mode, 457,299 to Grid 45) [Sheepie Mix]
9A replay of my current personal best on Gridrunner iOS, recorded from my iPhone 4, and current #1 GameCenter and OpenFeint score (as of upload date, 26th Feb 2012). Quite possibly one of the most entertaining games I've ever played.
Gridrunner, Jeff Minter's legendary shooting game, got an update on iOS, and it is one of the purest shooting experiences you can get. Pure survival, no fancy chaining systems or whatnot, just wall-to-wall enemies.
Some scoring and survival techniques are demonstrated in this replay, including:
- excessive use of "bulling" (ramming enemies while invincible to get them off-screen quickly),
- grid stalling (on grids where powerups are limited and blobbies are spawned by the vertical turret),
- invincibility riding,
- suiciding on the last primary enemy to cycle the grid safely (on trickier grids, this is a necessity),
- suicide clearance (on some harder grids with limited powerups, the fastest way to cycle the grid is to suicide repeatedly to clear formations as quickly as possible).
Most of the run went quite well. Lots of luck in places, but managed to get off the deadly Grid 42 with some lives in stock. Lots of score potential missed due to safety play in places, and various deaths with a bunch of powerups on screen. Looking at around 500,000 with a somewhat competent run through the mid-40 grids.
As the replay was recorded without sound, I've mixed in a collection of tracks from Space Giraffe, Tempest 3000, and a couple of fitting tracks from Squarepusher. I was looking around for the Gridrunner Revolution soundtrack to use in the mix, but couldn't find it, so these will have to do, lol. Enjoy the replay. ^_-
