► REVIEW
"Griffin" is a hybrid vertical shoot 'em up developed by Telenet Japan and published by Renovation Game in 1991 for the Game Gear in Japan. It's a hybrid shmup because most of the levels don't auto-scroll, with the exception of the third stage of the first loop.

The game's story takes place in the near future, when a new tank called the Griffin is created to combat the threat of Country I. During testing, the engineer responsible for the project is kidnapped. His granddaughter, Minchuuto, takes control of the Griffin and sets out alone to rescue her grandfather, facing countless enemies along the way.

The game offers two controls: shoot and bomb. With the main fire, you can shoot in all directions; with the other weapons, you only shoot upwards. The bomb is powerful and clears the screen.

During the game, the HUD displays only your energy bar, divided into three distinct colors. When only the red portion remains, there's an imminent danger of losing a life. Pausing the game provides access to a menu to switch weapons, check the number of lives and bombs in your arsenal, and also your score.

Items appear when destroying gray tanks: the letter P increases your attack power; the letter E restores all your energy; the letter C grants an extra life; and the letter B provides an additional bomb.

The tank's hitbox is enormous—practically the entire vehicle sprite. The biggest challenge, besides enemy fire, is avoiding collisions with obstacles, such as flares or tanks rapidly descending toward you.

The bosses, for the most part, are uninspired. Despite their interesting visuals, the real challenge lies in figuring out what needs to be destroyed to defeat them, which makes these battles unexciting. Generally, you simply need to eliminate their cannons—a challenge that feels lazy.

Upon death, you return to the same location, but with all your weapons weakened. There is, however, a very short period of invincibility (iFrame) upon respawning.

At the end of each stage, the player is presented with a cute and graceful illustration of the protagonist.

The sound effects are loud and clear, undoubtedly the highlight of the soundtrack.

Overall, I found "Griffin" somewhat tedious, mainly due to its repetitive gameplay and lack of significant challenge. The graphics are beautiful, the music is good—but not particularly memorable—and the sound effects are quite competent. Perhaps the biggest draw for otaku fans are the illustrations of the main character at the end of each stage. I recommend the game, but with reservations.

Leave a comment about "Griffin" and I'd love to hear your opinion.

Best regards, and God bless you.
