Grimace's Birthday (Game Boy Color) Playthrough
A playthrough of McDonald's and Krool Toys' 2023 action game for the Nintendo Game Boy Color, Grimace's Birthday.
Grimace, Mickey D's exceedingly creepy anthropomorphic tastebud mascot, recently celebrated his 52nd birthday, and to commemorate the occasion, he has been given the starring role in a brand new video game. Presented as a free-to-play web app, "Grimace's Birthday" (https://grimacesbirthday.com/) went live on June 12th.
What makes Grimace's Birthday a novelty worth talking about is that it's a brand-new game that runs on the Game Boy Color, an 8-bit handheld system that was released 25 years ago. The game's web-portal runs it through an emulator, but if you snag a copy of the ROM, it can also be played on original GBC hardware.
The game itself is a simple collect-a-thon platformer. The first couple of stages see Grimace skateboarding around a building collecting purple shakes, and the rest involve running across rooftops dodging birds and squirrels. It's not deep, but it sure is an entertaining way to blow five or ten minutes while you're waiting for a download to finish.
But the thing that I find most entertaining about it is how anachronistic the whole experience is. It's so trippy to see a legit GBC game that features mock-up Tweets and modern internet slang.
Happy birthday, Grimace!
