The game begins with a prologue that introduces the main characters and the setting of Los Santos, a fictional city based on Los Angeles. The player controls Michael, Trevor and Brad, three criminals who are robbing a bank in North Yankton, a rural state. The heist goes wrong when the police arrive and a shootout ensues. Michael and Trevor manage to escape, but Brad is fatally wounded and presumed dead. Michael fakes his death and enters witness protection with the help of a corrupt FIB agent named Dave Norton. Trevor, believing that Michael betrayed him, goes into hiding in Blaine County, a desert region near Los Santos. Nine years later, in 2013, Michael is living under a new identity as a retired millionaire with his family in Rockford Hills, a wealthy neighborhood in Los Santos. He is unhappy with his life and suffers from depression and anger issues. Trevor is still a violent and unstable criminal who runs a methamphetamine empire with his associates Ron, Wade and Chef. He is also involved in a feud with a rival gang led by the Aztecas.
