I have been fortunate to have Endless Clips Hero Perk, so beyond that I think best way to improve the Commando is to use best Damage I can manage along with best Fire Rate.

For the 3rd Slot, I am not sure if I should use Fast Track (since tends to become 3rd level Veteran from scratch in battles going my way without needing it in single match). My alternative is to use Health, Steady, or Accuracy.
