H.265 vs ProRes Speed Test
H.265 vs ProRes Video Encoding Speed Test Which is Faster on a MacBook Pro M1 Max & DaVinci Resolve?
Thanks to @Cottn_ for the idea for this video 👍 Although I bet you didn't think the answer was so boring 😆
So in this video I'm testing the encoding speed of H.265 vs ProRes, very specifically with the Apple Media Engine on an Apple Silicon Mac. The computer being used is the MacBook Pro M1 Max and it's hardware acceleration for video encoding (the Apple Media Engine) which accelerates the encoding of a number of video codecs, in this instance, H.265 and ProRes.
The encoding is also being very specifically done from within DaVinci Resolve Studio.
Anyway, the bottom line. While both codecs are fast, it's ProRes that comes out the fastest. So, if file size is not an issue, maybe for an intermediate, but encode speed is. Then ProRes would be the better choice, even for sources that are only 8 Bit with 4:2:0 chroma subsampling.
Thanks again @Cottn_ for your comments and questions on my Elgato 4K X videos. It is truly refreshing to have input from someone who isn't drinking the Elgato Kool-Aid and who obviously understands the gravity of the Elgato lies and deception and doesn't find the questioning of their actions as being the actions of a conspiracy theorist nut job 😆 Seriously, you wouldn't believe the trivialising that Elgato have been doing with this whole problem and how their Reddit FanBoys are so dumb and blind to the gravity of the problems and just how dishonest and disingenuous Elgato are being toward Apple Silicon Mac users. It's just amazing that even when you have clear video evidence and you are clearly explaining what it is wrong, you still get all the FanBoys branding you as an idiot and conspiracy nutter.
If anyone is interested in understanding the BS that Elgato have been getting up to with this whole Apple Silicon Mac problem with their Elgato 4K X HDMI 2.1 USB-C capture card and other craziness of theirs regarding Apple products in general, checkout this playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLleKChtNUwZTxzhTWi-JG_UGhEQcb00pC
Also, checkout these Reddit posts and see exactly how Elgato have been lying and completely contradicting themselves. I will do a video about this soon.
